What is a REG file (a file with file extension REG)?
Files that contain the .reg file extension are most commonly used for Windows registry data files. These files contain segments of a user's Windows registry. This registry is a hierarchical database that stores a user's Windows configuration and settings. The REG files that are used by the Windows registry are saved in a text-based format.
The .reg file extension is also used by a variety of software applications to store registration information, such as the software registration key, serial number and other registration data. Removing these files from a user's hard drive may cause problems with the functionality of the system or may cause some programs to crash and develop errors.
