What is a INI file (a file with file extension INI)?

Files that contain the .ini file extension are most commonly associated with Windows software applications.

The INI files that are used by the Windows environment are configuration files that store the settings and preferences of an associated software program. These files are saved in text-based format and are used by the program when the application is launched by the user.

The .ini file extension is also used by the Gravis Ultra software program. These INI files contain sound bank setup files that are referenced by the Gravis application.

The IBM MWave DSP synthesizer also uses the .ini file suffix. These INI files contain sound bank setup files.

Google Picasa also uses the .ini file extension for its album info files.
